The Chludov Psalter, named after a nineteenth-century Russian owner, A. Chludov, is in the Historical Museum in Moscow (MS gr. 129). The manuscript was made in Constantinople sometime in the late ninth century, possibly as late as the early tenth. It is related in style and content to two other psalters (Paris. gr. 20 and Pantokrator cod. 61). In these three psalters illustrations were painted in the margins near psalm verses. These illustrations formed artistic commentaries about Orthodoxy and constituted attacks on heretics. The overall content relates the works to the militant spirit of the iconophiles -- their persecution at the hands of iconoclasts and their ultimate triumph over iconoclasm.

This single vellum leaf, originally part of a Book of Hours, contains the opening lines of the Litany, an essential section of prayers which usually occurs after the recitation of the Seven Penitential Psalms, as was the case in this manuscript. Dating from the Early Christian period, the Litany is an appeal for help in the form of a list of saints who are beseeched ora pro nobis (pray for us). The Litany opens with the three-fold Kyrie (Lord have mercy) and continues with invocations of the Trinity, the Virgin Mary, the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, followed by the list of apostles, saints, martyrs, confessors, incomplete on our leaf.

Manuscript containing a disputation between three gentlewomen-- a virgin, a matron and a widow--as to which state is the most dignified: the virginal, the married or the widowed. Italian, after 1481. 56 leaves of text, 4 blank. The argument, an apology for the virginal state, is imagined as taking place in Verona in 1481. The language shows Venetian provinance.
Kentuckiensis III: Book of Hours

KY. III is in excellent state of preservation, although two leaves are known to be missing, and several prayers were appended to the original manuscript at later dates. The inclusion of St. Vincent the confessor in the calendar for April 5 suggests that its execution postdate 1455, the date of the Dominican saint's canonization.
In contrast to the exuberance of decoration in northen European Books of Hours, Italian exempla tend to be somewhat more reserved, ornamenting fewer pages. In KY. III three important sections in the Book--the Penitential Psalms, the Office of the Dead, and the Office of the Passion--are provided with full borders; the opening to the Hours of the Virgin doubtlessly was also so decorated but is now missing. On each folio, a decorated initial is surrounded by borders on the folio's four sides. Ornament tends to be symmetrical and brilliantly colored, often with considerable suggestion of three-dimensionality. In each of these folios, the classicizing putti in the lower margins pantomime actions concording with the sense of the text: putti sleeping next to a skull for the Office of the Dead, towing acanthus garlands in imitation of figures bearing the dead Christ for the Office of the Passion, and playing instruments in accompaniment to the incipit of the Penitential Psalms.

Kentuckiensis IV: Book of Hours

Because of their destination for private devotion, Books of Hours in the later Middle Ages were frequently of small, indeed sometimes diminuitive, size, in order to be held conveniently by the worshipper and carried about on trips or pilgrimages. KY. IV can be attributed to the atelier of a particular artist of fifteenth-century Bruges, that of Willem Vrelant (d. ca. 1480).
The periode of Vrelant's activity coincides with the "golden age" of Franco-Flemish illumination and is associated with the patronage of Philip the Good of Burgundy (1396-1467). Analysis of the borders in KY. IV makes it possible to attribute this manuscript to the Vrelant atelier. When Willem Vrelant arrived in Bruges from Utrecht shortly after 1450 in order to take advantage of its thriving book trade, he quickly developed his own distinctive style of border ornament: blue and gold acanthus with white dots along the spines, combined with varieties of flowers and fruits with alternating gold and green leaves, all set against a white ground dotted with black, blue, and gold. This describes the borders of KY. IV precisely.
Unusual among the manuscripts associated with Bruges, KY. IV lacks figural ornament. However, we know that it was a common practice in the workshops of this Flemish center to tip-in miniatures after the text and been written and the initials and borders illuminated. The manuscript is also fragmentary, lacking both the calendar and the Office of the Dead.

This complete and highly ornamented Book of Hours is unique in this collection in that, on the basis of style and iconography, it may be attributed to a particular artist of the second half of the fifteenth century, one Maître François, named as "Egregius Pictor Franciscus" in another source. This attribution is due to the work of Priscilla Bain Smith in her M.A. thesis [University of Kentucky], who demonstrated how not only the miniatures, ornaments, and initials, but also the choices in the variable portions of the Book of Hours' composition are characteristic of other Hours known to be by François' hand.

Kentuckiensis VIII: Prayer Book

Filippo Maria Visconti, Duke of Milan and Count of Pavia from 1412 to 1447 is mentioned in the course of a prayer on fol. 41r and in two other passages in the manuscript. The last of the Visconti dukes, Filippo Maria won several important victories over his arch-enemies, the Venetians and Florentines. His eventual downfall resulted from the fact that he never trusted his generals and would not allow them to command long enough to score too many decisive victories, preferring the defeat of his forces to the possibility of a strong second-in-command. . . .
This manuscript is not a Book of Hours but rather a simple prayerbook, including a calendar, a selection of prayers against the plague and sudden death, Psalms, Gospel extracts, suffrages, and a series of lists of "bad-luck" days or dies egyptiacae. The superstitious nature of late medieval thought and the personal anxieties of the book's owner are manifest in the lengthy series of prayers from fol. 36r onward, to protect the owner from every imaginable danger, from being eaten by a lion to being run over in the street.

Kentuckiensis IX: Book of Hours (mixed)

This manuscript is interesting because of the extremely high quality of some of its decoration and illumination and because it is made up of portions of two manuscripts of distinctly differing styles, approximately a century apart in execution. It is difficult to ascertain whether the newer manuscript, Ms. B was made with the intention of completing a fragmentary older work, Ms. A, but the resulting synthesis, KY. IX, is still incomplete, and so it is likely that two originally complete Books of Hours became somehow damaged and were subsequently joined in the curious hybrid that is KY. IX.
Ms. A was in all ways a beautiful, high-quality work: it was written on thin, white parchment by a scribe of great surety and illuminated and decorated lavishly with miniatures, drolleries, intricate frames, initials, bar-endings, all glitteringly highlighted in gold. Several portions of the Hours of the Holy Spirit, a less important text usually not very highly or extensively decorated, survive in Ms. A. They are heavily ornamented, with a miniature for each of the two surviving Hours and intricate borders on every folio. . . .
The later manuscript, Ms. B, offers contrasts on every count. The parchment is heavy and uneven, the hand of the scribe or scribes is insecure and variable as well as being rather unattractive, the borders limited to important openings only and then executed roughly in modest materials. Initials occur less frequently in the newer portions of the manuscript and are awkwardly done; evidently the illuminator worked in something of a hurry because offsets from the initials throughout Ms. B attest to the closing of the leaves while the paint was still wet.

The quality and quantity of "decoration" in Books of Hours depended upon what a patron was able or willing to pay, although in the second half of the fifteenth century the demand for Hours was so high that extensively illustrated and decorated works, employing costly materials, bear unmistakable traces of hasty or negligent execution and second-rate draughtsmanship. This heavily decorated manuscript is an example of this trend.

Illuminated manuscript on vellum. (Horae Beatae Virginis Mariae, secundum usum Romanum cum calendario) Manuscript in Latin and Italian on 114 leave (7 by 5 inches), with 18 large miniatures in liquid gold and colors and 12 very small ones at the beginning of each month representing the signs of the zodiac, and 2 full page miniatures of the arms of France and Savoy. Each page with a richly ornamented border of various types of flowers, as well as conventional designs on a solid gilt ground, colorful floreated initial letters on gold grounds, smaller gold initial letters on red and blue grounds.

An unusual manuscript with a type of decoration not often met with. An accompanying description states that this was written and illuminated for Marguerite de France, Duchesse de Berry, Daughter of Francis I, on the occasion of her marriage with Emmanuel-Philibert, Duke of Savoy, in 1559, as evidenced by the royal arms of France on the recto of fol. 21 and the ducal arms of Savoy on the verso.
The calendar is preceded by an almanac for ten years (1560-69).
